Something got lost in the translation is a phrase you don't want to hear in reference to your efforts to communicate your ideas in another language.
The art of translation requires not only a knowledge of vocabulary, but the cultural experience to understand nuances in both languages. Note the difference between a translation by a computer program vs. a native speaker:

Original                    Computer Version                  XiteQ
1.  the Pope                    la papa                                    El Papa
2.  tax tips                       propinas de impuestos          sugerencias para sus impuestos

The computer followed the Spanish grammar rule that the article should agree with the noun in number and gender, translating "the Pope" as "the potato."

The word "tip" has various meanings. The computer selected "propinas" which is the tip you give a waiter. How nice of the government to offer to pay us tips on our taxes!

What does it cost? The going rate for translations varies from .20 to .40 per word. XiteQ generally charges .20 per word, unless it is a technical document and/or the turn-around time is crucial. Count the words in the document and multiply them by .20 to calculate the cost of translation.
