The Court Interpreter should be positioned next to the non-English speaker and away from ambient noise such as air conditioners or fans.
The Court Interpreter must be able to hear all exchanges clearly in order to interpret accurately. Therefore, it is important for all participants to speak clearly and audibly.
The Court Interpreter should have pen and paper handy and be permitted to consult a dictionary, if necessary.
Remember that while one member of the court team speaks and the others listen, the Court Interpreter is speaking continuously, translating what is said by everyone. For sessions longer than a few hours, more than one interpreter should be used, or breaks scheduled, to ensure that quality does not suffer due to fatigue.
